Recycling as a habit

One thing I learnt from my dad was to recycle and reuse old items as much as possible. Every junk which I collected from the various properties I manage are resold to a recycling chop shop. These shops accept all kinds of metals, aluminium, steel and copper. All the junk which is recyclable will be sent to the local recycling chop shop in exchange for a small amount. A lot of people think that these chop shops only collect aluminium cans but actually these recycling chop shops accept much more than that. Try to send them to the nearest recycling chop shop as possible as it’s really not worth the money and time to transfer the items.

Compressing all the metal for easy transport
You can usually identify these recycling chop easily by their trademark aluminium can decoration on their front premises. These shops are often quite secluded from the normal shops so it’s best to keep and eye and take note where they are.

Among the items which these recycling chop shops accepts are :

- Fridge (Peti Sejuk)
- Air Cond unit
- Car bonnet
- Metal drawers

The list is not quite exhaustive but as long as it’s a piece of metal it can be traded. That’s why in Malaysia you can see highway divider railings and metal drain caps stolen. All these items actually end up at these recycling chop shops. Currently these shops are monopolized by ethnic Indian community, they will collect these items and then resell to the recycling plants.

Recycling Dude
Weighing scale to measure the recycle items
I’ve got a tenant who operates a restaurant and I get to collect his used tin cans and dispose them for him. In addition, instead of throwing aways spoiled electrical equipment like TV, ovens, fridge, these items will end up at the local recycling chop shop. The money collected normally is quite minuscule but at least it’s enough for a decent meal and toll and transport costs. It also helps if you own a van because transporting all these items will require a bigger vehicle.
